Toray Advanced Materials Korea(TAK) held a completion ceremony on June 16 for the expansion of its Meta-Aramid Fiber Unit 2, with an annual capacity of 3,000 tons, at Gumi Plant 1 in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Through the expansion, TAK has secured a total annual production capacity of 5,400 tons, including its existing production lines, and established a stable supply system to respond to growing global demand.
The ceremony was attended by around 120 participants, including Lee Chul-woo, governor of North Gyeongsang Province, Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho, National Assembly members Koo Jakeun and Kang Myunggu, and other city and provincial officials, as well as Tomonobu Nishimura, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Fibers & Textiles Division at Toray Industries, Inc., Motohisa Kuno, Chairman of TAK, and President Kim Young-seop of TAK.
TAK was the first company in Korea to establish a mass production system for meta-aramid fiber based on the dry spinning process. Leveraging its world-class quality and technological capabilities, the company has strengthened its competitiveness in the global market. TAK will continue to solidify trust with customers and the market by enhancing its differentiated R&D capabilities and expanding its lineup of high-value-added products.
Earlier this year, TAK showcased its technological competitiveness by participating in Techtextil 2026 in Germany, IEEE PES T&D 2026 in the United States, and International Fire & Safety Expo Korea 2026 in Korea.
Meta-aramid fiber is a super fiber with outstanding heat resistance, flame retardancy and excellent electrical insulation properties, maintaining its performance even at temperatures above 200°C. Demand is expanding across a wide range of advanced industries, including power infrastructure, eco-friendly mobility, defense and industrial safety.
In particular, as the AI and data center markets continue to expand, the stability and efficiency of power equipment are becoming increasingly important, further increasing the role of meta-aramid fiber with high heat resistance and high insulation performance.
President Kim Young-seop stated, “This expansion is an important investment to respond to the growth of future advanced industries,” adding, “TAK will continue materials innovation that supports the future of industry through constant change and innovation, while also contributing further to revitalizing the local economy and strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s advanced industries.”
