Winners of the 8th Korea Toray Science Foundation Award

The Korea Toray Science Foundation (Chairman: Young-Kwan Lee) has announced the recipients of the 8th Korea Toray Science and Technology Award.Professor Jong-Seung Kim of Korea University’s Department of Chemistry has been selected in the Basic Research category, while Professor Hyung-Joon Cha of POSTECH’s Department of Chemical Engineering has been selected in the Applied Research category. Each awardee will receive a prize of 100 million KRW.Professor Kim pioneered the field of theranostics—a technology enabling selective diagnosis and treatment of tumors—leading global pharmaceutical innovation in this domain. He has also been named one of the “Most Influential Researchers in the World” for 11 consecutive years since 2014, significantly elevating the profile of Korean science.Professor Cha, a leading scholar in biomaterials engineering, has been recognized for his research on mussel-derived adhesive proteins—the only work of its kind worldwide. His efforts have driven original material development, expanded into the medical field, enabled diverse applications, and contributed to the advancement of marine biotechnology materials through successful technology transfers.In addition, five young scientists have been selected for the Korea Toray Fellowship. Each will receive 150 million KRW in research funding over three years.The fellowship awardees are :Basic Research : Professor Yoon-su Park (KAIST, Department of Chemistry), Professor Chang-yoon Son (Seoul National University, Department of Chemistry)Applied Research : Professor Min-Kyu Kim (Inha University, Department of Chemistry), Professor Soo-yeon Cho (Sungkyunkwan University, Department of Chemical Engineering), Professor Him-chan Cho (KAIST, Department of Materials Science and Engineering)Candidates for the Korea Toray Science and Technology Award and Fellowship were nominated between April and June, with recipients selected following a rigorous review process. The ceremony will be held on October 31.Established in 2018 to advance Korea’s scientific and technological development, the Korea Toray Science Foundation has to date provided a total of 6.5 billion KRW in support, benefitting 14 Science and Technology Award laureates, 30 Fellowship researchers, and 245 university students in science and engineering.

TAK Donates Braille Practice Books for Visually Impaired Children

Toray Advanced Materials Korea (CEO Kim Young-seop) announced that it has donated 60 Braille practice books, handmade by employees and their children, to the social welfare organization Changemaker to support the education of visually impaired children.The Braille practice books are tactile teaching aids that allow Braille characters to be easily attached and removed for practice. Their playful design, combined with fun explanations, sparks children’s interest in Braille and enhances learning effectiveness.In addition, the books are beneficial not only for visually impaired children but also for adults who have acquired severe visual impairments later in life, helping to reduce the rate of Braille illiteracy.Employees who took part in the volunteer activity said, “It was even more meaningful to participate with our children, and it gave us an opportunity to reflect on the importance of building a more inclusive and communicative society.”Toray Advanced Materials Korea(TAK) has been making and donating various Braille learning materials every year, including Braille storybooks, posters, and cubes. It plans to continue its sharing activities to support the visually impaired as well as other underprivileged groups in society.

TAK hosts Military Experience Program with Sister Unit and donates for Unit Development

Toray Advanced Materials Korea (CEO Kim Young-seop) held a military experience program with its sister unit, the 5th Artillery Brigade, from August 5 to 6. The two-day program was attended by 40 employees and their elementary school-aged children.The program began with a welcoming ceremony upon arrival at the unit. On the first day, participants were introduced to the brigade and experienced various aspects of military life, including hands-on activities with combat equipment such as firearms, self-propelled artillery, and other military supplies. They also stayed overnight in the barracks, offering a rare glimpse into soldiers' daily routines.On the second day, participants joined a DMZ Peace Tour, visiting key sites such as infiltration tunnels, the Peace Observatory, and the Cheorwon History and Culture Park. The tour provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of national security and peace.In addition to the donation made in April, Toray Advanced Materials Korea provided an additional contribution of KRW 10 million to the sister unit to boost morale and support the well-being of its soldiers.Employees who participated in the program shared, “It was a meaningful opportunity to experience military culture with our children and to truly understand the value of national defense,” adding, “We express our sincere gratitude to the soldiers who devote themselves to protecting our country.”

TAK donates upcycled laptops... ESG Practices by resolving the information gap

Toray Advanced Materials Korea (CEO Kim Young-seop) announced on the 21st that it donated 148 laptops to the Korea IT Welfare Promotion Agency and environmental groups to improve digital accessibility for the information-deprived class.The laptops donated this time were used by employees for work over the past four years, and will be sequentially delivered to the information-deprived class after reorganizing the operating system and software. This donation was made to provide practical help to classes with limited access to the digital environment, beyond simple device support.Including this year’s donation, Toray Advanced Materials Korea(TAK) has contributed a total of approximately 600 laptops. Through these efforts, the company actively promotes ESG management by simultaneously addressing the digital divide and promoting resource circularity.President Kim Young-seop stated, “In a time where information accessibility directly leads to a gap in education and opportunity, Toray Advanced Materials Korea (TAK) will continue to provide practical support to the digitally deprived class.”
